The process of quincunx downsampling in image coding and compression is shown, and the results of its application are accessed. Quincunx downsampling splits the spectrum of a image in two diamond-shaped subbands, and this allows the information to which the human eye is most sensitive to be preserved, and also requiring less bits in a lossy compression. In this paper, we show that quincunx subband coding actually delivers these results. Theory of lattices are briefly reviewed, and a technique that provides successive decompositions for a quincunx lattice is developed, which will allow multi-level decompositions. Simulations were carried out and the results are compared to the rectangular separable subband decomposition.
